IT Competencies for RHITs

IT Competencies for RHIAs

There is still time for you to take advantage of the HITECH Workforce Training Program developed by the ONC to prepare individuals with the IT and medical knowledge to function in the world of the EHR and MU. In order to take full advantage of the tuition assistance, you must start the program by September/October (depends upon the college selected).
  • Why not take advantage of this training while there is still tuition assistance available? After the tuition assistance is no longer available, all costs will have to be paid by the student.
  • Colleges are making special provisions for RHIAs and RHITs to take fewer components because of the knowledge base you already have PLUS you have the opportunity to test out of components!
  • If you don't want to take the components but you feel ready for the exams themselves, you can do that as well.  Just go to www.hitproexams.org
  • On top of all that, you can gain CE credit from AHIMA for the completion of the curriculum AND for just the completion of an exam (totally free for the exam)!!
Why not use this as a means to exemplify to others in healthcare that we can be the experts in the management of health information and the implementation and maintenance of the EHR?

Here is Region D's Home Page, has all kinds of helpful information:  Region D

Pitt Community Collegehas been named one of five institutions across the country to lead a regional consortium of community colleges to train thousands of new health information technology (health IT) professionals. This Pitt Community College led consortium received a $10.9 million cooperative agreement  (#09CC0078) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the first year of this training. Additional funding, to bring the total award to over $21.1 million is available for a second year after successful completion of a mid-project evaluation.

*This funding has enabled Pitt Community College to coordinate a consortium of 20 community colleges, across a 13-state region that stretches through the southeast from North Carolina to New Mexico, and includes almost one-third of the nation's population.  Each community college in the consortium has created training programs designed to be completed in six months or less for trainees who already have either Information Technology (IT) or medical backgrounds or experience. The colleges in this region are offering this education on-line and in some locations also in a face-to-face methodology.

This curriculum was developed through federal funding by five of the foremost academic centers in the country, including Oregon Health & Science University, Duke University, Columbia University, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Johns Hopkins University.

Key Points of this TrainingHealth Information Technology professionals, among other capabilities, support the implementation and maintenance of electronic health records that make information exchanges possible between health care providers and public health authorities  and thereby improve the quality and efficiency of medical care.

Training is funded in six health/IT priority workforce roles, including:

*  Practice workflow and information management redesign specialists
*  Clinician/practitioner consultants
*  Implementation support specialists
*  Implementation managers
*  Technical/software support staff
*  Trainers
